John Alvin explains: In "Bittersweet Embrace", the character expressions are meant to evoke the heartbreak of being apart and yet the impossibility of being together as two very different beings. Love hurts before it heals. Their actions are really a bittersweet response to the spell that holds him and binds them both first in sadness and later in love. The art is meant to be sadly romantic and not literal to a moment in the story. It is rather a visual metaphor intended to symbolize the trials and tribulations of the heart.
